Driving Skills To Practice:

Driving skills to practice when driving. Remember, the more you practice and drive with your parents the better drivers you become.

  • When backing, look over your right shoulder out your rear window, looking for traffic, until your car comes to a complete stop. Back slowly, no faster than a slow walk.
  • When stopping at a intersection with a stop sign, stop before the crosswalk or the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk/crosswalk stop at the stop sign. At stoplights, stop at the white line. When it turns green, proceed with caution while looking for any vehicles that might not stop.
  • When stopping at a stop sign or a stoplight, the correct distance to stay between you and the vehicle ahead of you is about a half to three quarters of a car length, or when you are able to see the rear tires of the car in front of you.
  • Glance in your mirrors every 6 to 8 seconds. As you go through the intersections glance to see if any vechicles are coming. Always be alert.
  • When parking up-hill with a curb, wheels are turned to the left. When parking up-hill without a curb, wheels are turned to the right. When parking down-hill with a curb, wheels are turned to the right. When parking down-hill without a curb, turn wheels to the right again. Always set your parking brake when parking on a hill.
  • When changing lanes, check your mirrors, signal in the direction you are changing, check your blind spot and make your change. Try to maintain your speed without going over the speed limit. Looking in advance will help you make the change smoothly.
  • Practice your Y turn, parallel parking and your straight backing up. All Driving skills are on the road test.
  • Watch your speed and following distance. You should be within 2 miles per hour of the posted speed limit, not over, and keep at least a 2 second following gap, at 25MPH.
  • Need more help, review your Wisconsin Motorists Handbook to answer any question you might have, or call us.
